Seven goals and five assists in 15 appearances across all competitions is an impressive return for Gabri Veiga. But focusing only on his goal tally would miss what makes his contribution to Porto so interesting.
The Spaniard was named UEFA Player of the Match after Porto's convincing 4-1 victory over Napoli, which also gave the Portuguese side their first Champions League win of the campaign. It was another reminder of how much influence Veiga is having on this team.
What interests me most is his involvement before the final shot. The goals and assists are easy to count, but his ability to find space between the lines, pick out teammates and create dangerous situations is just as important.
I'd want Porto getting the ball to him as often as possible in those attacking areas. Give him time to turn, look forward and pick his pass, and defenders suddenly have another problem to deal with.
He's clearly producing the numbers, but there's more to his game than finishing opportunities. Porto need players who can change the rhythm of an attack, and Veiga is giving them another way to hurt opponents.
The challenge now is maintaining that influence as the season gets tougher. If he continues producing at this rate, Porto will have a very important player on their hands.
Do you think Gabri Veiga is becoming the creative heartbeat of this Porto side, or is his goal contribution getting more attention than his actual influence on the game?
