Josh Downs has reportedly requested a trade, and it's not difficult to understand why he's frustrated after Indianapolis suffered a humiliating 42-7 defeat against Jacksonville.
Downs caught four passes for 23 yards and a touchdown, but there wasn't much to celebrate when the scoreboard told such an ugly story. One player can only do so much when the entire team is struggling.
The trade discussion shared by @NFLTelegram has placed Downs among the Colts players who could be heading for the exit. If I'm Indianapolis, I'm certainly willing to listen to offers. However, there's a big difference between entertaining a trade and practically giving a player away.
Downs still has value, and the Colts shouldn't forget that simply because he's unhappy with the situation. If another team wants his services, it should come prepared with an offer that reflects what he's worth.
I wouldn't hold a player against his wishes indefinitely, but Indianapolis also has a responsibility to protect its own interests. A disappointing season doesn't mean the front office should start accepting whatever somebody is willing to throw on the table.
Would you trade Downs if a reasonable offer arrived, or would you keep him and try to convince him that Indianapolis still has a future worth being part of?
