There is something strange about the way NFL teams handle struggling defenses. When things go wrong, the defensive coordinator often ends up taking the blame. Sometimes that's fair. Other times, I wonder whether the coach is simply the easiest person to throw under the bus.

The Panthers' decision to part ways with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero after a heavy defeat against Green Bay has brought this subject back into the conversation.

But how much responsibility should a defensive coordinator really carry? A coach can draw up a brilliant game plan, but players still have to execute it. Missed tackles, blown coverage, poor communication and individual mistakes can ruin even the best strategy.

Look at it this way. You wouldn't blame a movie director for every bad performance if the actors ignored the script.

So where should the responsibility fall when a defense completely falls apart?

Do teams make coaching changes too quickly, or is replacing the coordinator sometimes the only way to wake everybody up?
