Brandon Aiyuk has reportedly filed for reinstatement and plans to report to the San Francisco 49ers on Friday. That's a pretty significant development for a player who hasn't appeared in an NFL game since October 2024.
There's no question Aiyuk has talent. At his best, he's a dangerous route runner who can stretch the field, create separation and give Brock Purdy another serious weapon. Remember his 1,342-yard season in 2023? That's the receiver San Francisco would love to get back.
But there's a massive difference between remembering what a player can do and knowing what he can deliver right now.
Aiyuk has missed an enormous amount of football. He'll need to rebuild his conditioning, get comfortable with the offense again and establish some chemistry with Purdy. Nobody should assume he'll walk straight back into the starting lineup.
There's also the relationship to consider. His contract dispute and previous disagreements with the organization have created plenty of tension. The 49ers have to decide whether bringing him back is worth the disruption, particularly with the November 10 trade deadline approaching.
Personally, I'd give him a chance to prove himself, provided there's a clear plan for his return. But San Francisco shouldn't hand him a major role simply because of what he achieved two seasons ago.
Would you welcome Aiyuk back and give him a chance to earn his place, or would you trade him while there's still an opportunity to get something valuable in return?
