Every other major sport lets participants know the score while competing. I like open scoring in principle.

Open scoring changes strategy. The trailing fighter attacks, but the leader may spend five minutes avoiding risk.

Control needs purpose. A takedown followed by immediate escape should not outweigh three clean combinations.

Visible damage can mislead. Some fighters swell instantly, while a hidden body shot can change the entire fight.

MMA judging: damage has to beat control

A fighter should not win a round by holding position against the fence while absorbing the cleaner strikes. Control matters when it creates offense or shuts down meaningful danger, but it should not become a stopwatch contest. Judges say damage leads the criteria, yet scorecards do not always feel that way. I want open scoring after each round too. Let corners know the actual situation before round three.
