Joe Milton is getting his shot against the Giants, and I'm curious to see what he does with it. NFL Network has reported that Philadelphia is making the switch from Tanner McKee, giving Milton his first NFL start.
The temptation will be to focus on that big arm and wait for a spectacular downfield throw. I'd rather see how quickly he reads a defense, makes good decisions and gets the ball out on time. There's no point chasing highlight plays if the offense keeps finding itself in third-and-long situations.
I'd keep the game plan relatively simple early on and let Milton settle into the game. Give him some manageable throws, use his mobility when the opportunity is there, and see whether he can keep the offense on schedule. The Eagles need consistency more than another collection of empty possessions.
One big throw might get the crowd excited, but I'd be more impressed by a quarterback who makes the right decisions for four quarters.
What would convince you that Milton deserves a longer look as Philadelphia's starting quarterback?
