AEK Athens were just 15 minutes away from a famous result against Real Madrid. They were leading 2-1 in the 75th minute, but somehow managed to walk away with nothing after a dramatic 3-2 defeat.

That's a painful way to lose a football match.

Kylian Mbappé brought Madrid level before Federico Valverde delivered the decisive blow in stoppage time. According to Fabrizio Romano's Telegram feed, the victory also extended Madrid's winning run to seven consecutive matches in all competitions.

Madrid deserve credit for refusing to give up, but AEK will be kicking themselves over how this one ended.

If I'm looking at that performance from AEK's perspective, the biggest frustration is allowing Valverde the space to produce such a decisive finish after working so hard to get themselves into a winning position. At that stage of the match, concentration has to be everything.

There's no shame in losing to Real Madrid, but letting a victory slip away so late is another matter entirely. AEK had given themselves a genuine opportunity to produce something memorable, only to see it disappear in the closing moments.

That dressing room review is going to be uncomfortable.

Should AEK take encouragement from pushing Real Madrid so close, or is throwing away a lead that late something the players should be seriously disappointed about?
