At 0–7, the Chargers have some serious thinking to do. Khalil Mack is 35, has three sacks in seven games and is playing on an expiring deal.

I think there's a reasonable argument that Khalil Mack is beginning to hit the wall, although I'd stop short of saying he's finished.

At 35, he's well beyond the normal NFL career span. Here's why the concern is justified.

How Mack compares with the average NFL player
Mack's age: 35.

NFL experience: 13 seasons.

2026 production: 3 sacks in 7 games.

2025: 5.5 sacks in 12 games.

2024: 6 sacks in 16 games.

2023: 17 sacks in 17 games.

The average NFL career is often quoted at around 3.3 to 4.5 years, depending on the study and how career length is measured. A 2025 Statista report puts the average linebacker career at roughly 3 years.

Mack has already enjoyed an extraordinary career by those standards.
